History of Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan

The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan was built by Sultan Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Qalawun between 1356 and 1363 CE. It is considered a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture and one of the greatest monuments of Islamic civilisation. The building served as both a mosque and a school for all four Sunni schools of law, with separate iwans (halls) for each. Its monumental entrance portal — over 38 metres high — is one of the tallest in Islamic architecture.
